Benefits of Power Sensing Approach for Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers that use the current sensing approach go well with RMS supply voltages or constant DC. But there are better options to deal with variable currents. Here, a power sensing circuit breaker is able to do a better job.
Take the case of a laptop battery. In a laptop battery, as soon as you unplug the wall cube, the supply voltage drops. This happens because the battery voltage is lower than the voltage supplied by the wall cube. When the battery is fully charged, the battery voltage is close to 4.1V, but falls below 3V when it is close to fully discharged.
Where there is no constancy in the voltage source and if there is limited power, it is better to go with a circuit breaker based on the power sensing approach than the current sensing approach.
For additional protection, you can always opt for ground fault devices, switches and sensors. These can monitor your power usage and give you diagnostics to help you protect your device.
When you select a company to make custom power supplies for you, look for a company with a lot of experience and wide portfolio of custom power supply solutions. The power supply solution that you finally choose should be able to provide accurate and reliable inputs for controlling, protecting and monitoring your equipment.
