New and More Advanced Security for IIoT and IoT

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Internet of Things (IoT) are new developments. Even people associated with these technologies are still struggling to grasp their capabilities and vulnerabilities. This is dangerous because cyber-criminals are always on the lookout for ways to exploit these weaknesses.

The threat is compounded by the fact that current cyber security solutions rely on outdated protocols like regular updates, for protection. These traditional solutions cannot protect against zero day attacks. A zero day attack exploits a vulnerability in the embedded software, before the vendor becomes aware of it and can patch it. It has happened many times before. But there is hope in sight.

Some companies have come up with cloud dependent, real time intelligence to protect embedded systems from cyber-attacks. These systems collect cyber-security intelligence from a large number of sensors and devices, mobile applications, files, URLs and more, to provide real time information on cyber-threats to IOT embedded designers.

Since IOT devices are basically dependent on the internet to execute commands and programs, a cloud based intelligence platform might just be the thing that will save IOT from unknown threats. These cloud based systems can also inspect and filter all incoming/outgoing traffic between the IoT devices and control systems working out of the internet. This will stop malware in its tracks before it infiltrates the endpoint devices or downstream networks.
